The
Swara Sonora Trio, an innovative and vibrant group of musicians,
takes
their name from two different cultures that reflect their origin
and inspiration. Swara is
an Indonesian word meaning
sounds and Sonora refers to the Sonoran Desert,
where the city of Tucson, their original home base, is located. The
Trio first came together in 2004, when Indonesian-born pianist Aryo
Wicaksono, soprano Kathryn Mueller, and baritone Nathan Krueger were
assigned as teaching partners in the Tucson Unified School District's
Opening Minds Through the Arts (OMA) program, an extension of their
work as
graduate students at the University of Arizona. They soon discovered
a shared vision for new music and imaginative programming, and begin
performing as a trio.
In
2006, they expanded their |
perspective
and commissioned a new work, "Love & Variations," by
prominent Indonesian composer Ananda Sukarlan. After the world
premiere of "Love & Variations" in
April of 2007, the Trio undertook an ambitious project to bring
Ananda Sukarlan's piece to Indonesia. Their
efforts resulted in a
three-week tour of Indonesia in August 2009. The Trio performed in four cities
on the islands of Java and Bali, culminating with a performance with the Surabaya
Symphony Orchestra that celebrated Indonesian Independence Day and was broadcast
throughout Indonesia. The proceeds from the tour benefited programs
for children in Indonesia through UNICEF Indonesia, and throughout the world
through the Rotary Club International END Polio Campaign.
In
addition to their appearances in Indonesia, they have performed
across Southern Arizona and Mexico and recently made their Pittsburgh
Debut on the Joan Chambers
Concert Series. The Trio’s profile has been featured in publications
in the United States, and their media interviews and live performances have
been broadcast internationally through Metro TV Morning News Edition,
Bali Vision News, Radio Arts Indonesia, Radio Spain Camargo-Madrid, and the
Voice of America Radio Network. With
a goal of infusing the repertoire with innovative new music,
The Swara Sonora Trio is committed to commissioning music from
up-and-coming young composers. The Trio also gives chamber music
a fresh and modern twist by uniting different artistic disciplines
and exploring multi-cultural themes. Members of the Trio all
have successful solo careers, in a variety of musical styles
and outlets.
